Want To Work In The Writing Industry?
If you’ve ever thought about a career in writing you will know that it can be tough getting a break. Careers in journalism are notoriously difficult to get into and it can be hard to find getting relevant experience but there are other avenues to explore that are great for developing your profile as well as enhancing your experience. One of those is looking for jobs in Content Marketing. With online now becoming one of the most prominent parts of a company’s marketing strategy there are many opportunities for those with a creative flare. This is the avenue that Betsy Green took after graduating a couple of years ago and now, she now works for Mainline Menswear a leading online fashion retailer producing content for their blog. Here’s her story:
Betsy graduated from the University of Hull in 2010 with a 2:1 in English with Creative Writing. Yorkshire born and bred, Betsy decided to enter the competitive job market in Yorkshire. After a couple of years doing shop work after graduating Betsy set her mind to applying for graduate jobs in the competitive industry of writing. Betsy had success with music reviewing and rock journalism writing for a number of online platforms and magazines including the UK’s biggest music magazines Record Collector and AOR magazine Fireworks.
“I began looking for graduate jobs day in day out, and you soon reach the point where you think that it’s never going to happen as the market is far too competitive. Eventually in 2012 I got my first break and got my first graduate job in Scarborough working for HIBU as a web copywriter. This job allowed me to take the first step on the career ladder and provided me with invaluable skills in copywriting and SEO optimisation. I wrote websites for small business and advised customers about marketing copy over the phone. I enjoyed the job but what’s more, the enhancement my CV got from the job was incredible”
After working at HIBU for roughly 18 months Betsy than received an email about an extremely exciting opportunity for a Content Executive at one of Britain’s biggest online designer menswear shops, Mainline Menswear. Feeling confident due to the skills she gained at HIBU Betsy applied for the role and was successful in her application.
“I now have an incredible role; Content Executive which involves writing SEO optimised copy for the website and blog on a daily basis, I also help run all social media campaigns. The opportunity I have been given is nothing short of amazing, the company is going from strength to strength and I get to write about some of the world’s greatest designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Versace, HUGO BOSS and many more! I never thought I would end up working in the fashion industry as such, but that’s the great thing about English and writing, it’s extremely adaptable.
I advise that graduates who want to enter the writing industry pay attention to the world of the internet, as this was something that originally, hadn’t even crossed my mind. Don’t just think about newspapers and magazines, also focus on internet writing as the internet constantly grows, and with it the opportunities do.”
